open ended question - week quatro

Is the unruliness of Macondo the people, the times, or the result of a fictional town?

It seems like some kind of uproarious activity or scandal is taking place in Macondo. The intense war and all of it's side effects, the multitude of deaths, the interactions between lovers and friends. Are these events a byproduct of the people and their personalities? Or is it because it was a different time period than ours? Or is it because Macondo is fictional, so Marquez could make anything spectacular happen that his heart desired? Or something else entirely?

Discuss.

  1. wait, could you please clarify your question a bit? I guess, from what I understand of it, that I'd say that most of the unruliness comes from Marquez because he's the one creating all the chaos.

  2. I'm not sure which part you are confused about, but I will explain in general a bit more.

There seem to be a lot of things that happen throughout the book that are unlikely to happen in, say, Edina. Do you think it is because of the characters, or because of the time period, or because Macondo is fictional and Marquez can make anything happen?

  3. Another thing that the unruliness could stem from is just the culture of a different country. Maybe Macondo isn't all that unlike some actual towns in other countries, I just can't say first hand.

  4. On the other hand, if it was indeed the characters who made the town so unruly, this would also mean it was Marquez, since he created them and writes out their actions.

  5. Later on in the book, I remember an outsider's perspective finding Macondo "whorish". I can't find the exact quote, but I remember while reading I thought, oh, maybe it's not the times or the author, but really is the people who lived originally in Macondo, and how they raised their families. Which also leads to if these original founders were messed up, did the way they raised their children make them act the same way, or was it passed down genetically? So basically, the unruliness, is it nature, or nurture?
